The Investment team is made up of a group of talented individuals. These individuals include Rob Spanjaard and Wally Gray who are the portfolio manager and co-portfolio manager respectively.  The team also draws on the experience and knowledge of our investment counsel, Peter Du Toit, on a regular basis.  Peter du Toit is not involved in the day-to-day activities.

Rob Spanjaard

Rob Spanjaard

B.Comm, CTA 18 Portfolio Manager 28 As a student at UCT, Rob won the national Financial Mail reader stock picking competition. He graduated with a B.Com and CTA before passing the Chartered Accountants Board Exam. Rob then worked as a portfolio manager for Momentum Life under Peter du Toit. In his last year the unit trust he managed was rated number one in its sector. Rob left to co-lead a private equity deal that involved purchasing the assets of a bankrupt company.In 2005, after growing the turnover and profits by 25% per annum for 15 years and the listing of the company as Sovereign Foods, Rob decided to sell his share of the business to institutional investors. At that stage Sovereign Foods was the most profitable company in its industry. Rob joined Wally at REZCO with the objective of establishing a consistently high performing unit trust company. The first unit trust was registered in 2004

Wally Gray

Wally Gray

B.Sc (Eng), MBL Cum laude 36 Co-Portfolio Manager 44 Wally has been involved throughout his working life in the investments industry. He started his investment career at the resources company Gencor, and subsequently moved to the investment division of Nedbank, where he managed private client portfolios as well as pension funds, such as Phillips SA, Metal Industries Pension Fund & others.Wally became the executive director of investments at Sage Holdings where he directed the management of the Sage Unit Trust, the Sage life insurance portfolios, and was executive director of Union & London, the JSE listed entrepreneurial finance company at Sage. He left Sage in 1981 and started Rezco.

Peter du Toit

Peter du Toit

B.Com (Econ), AEP  Cum Laude 16 Investment Counsel 46 Peter is a former chairman and current board member of the Investment Analysts Society and has been active in the investment and fund management industry for over 40 years. He joined Rezco to focus on new investment initiatives for South African investors. Peter was managing director of Momentum Asset Management, which became RMB Asset Management, where he served as executive director until he left in 2001 to join Rezco. Peter is registered as a portfolio manager with the Financial Services Board.

Jann Krynauw

B.Sc (Honours) in Actuarial Science, Qualified Actuary 5 Fixed Income Portfolio Manager & Actuary 13 Former senior investment consultant at Old Mutual Actuaries and Consultants and a qualified Actuary with 10 years industry experience. Jann has an B.Sc Honours in Actuarial Science degree and has also completed Computer Science studies at the University of Stellenbosch. In his spare time he runs an instrumental music duo Tonik and enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons.

Simon Sylvester

Simon Sylvester

B.Bus Science (Hons), CFA, CIPM 2 Head of Research & Co-Portfolio Manager 6 Simon joined Rezco in 2015, with previous experience at Deutsche Bank in London, Cogito Capital and Discovery Invest. He graduated from UKZN. He has been working in the financial markets for 9 years, and has a keen interest in stock picking, especially focusing on business strategy and how industries evolve through changing environments

Franscois Mulock-Houwer

Franscois Mulock-Houwer

B.Eng (Hons), M.Eng 1 Equity Analyst 2 Franscois studied at the University of Pretoria, earning a Bachelor’s, Honour’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his postgraduate studies, Franscois specialised in Energy Generation and Heat Transfer. Franscois’ experimental research in the field of Heat Transfer was published in multiple conference papers. Before starting at Rezco, Franscois worked as a design engineer at an environmental engineering consulting firm.

Richardt Benade

Richardt Benade

 B.Eng (Hons), M.SC Eng  1  Equity Analyst  2 As a qualified mechanical engineer, Richardt worked in the field of heavy vehicle dynamic modelling for over two years before joining Rezco Asset Management. He is a certified performance-based standards (PBS) assessor, a certification held by only four engineers in SA. In parallel with assessing, monitoring and improving truck safety, Richardt obtained his master’s degree from the University of the Witwatersrand under the supervision of Prof. F. Kienhöfer in 2015. Richardt’s research involved developing a data-driven approach to predicting the PBS performance of car-carriers in a fraction of the time compared to traditional methods. This work has been presented and published at a number of local and international road safety conferences.

Matthew Thomson

Matthew Thomson

 B.Com (Hons), CA (SA), CFA  1  Equity Analyst  2 Matthew studied at the University of Cape Town, earning a Bcom and Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting with Honours. Before joining Rezco, he completed his three year articles at Nedbank, where he worked predominantly in the Investment Banking field. Matthew placed 4th in his first CA board exam, being only one of 12 students nationally to receive a pass with Honours. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant as well as a CFA.
